Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati has died, his family has confirmed.

Chebukati, 63, died Thursday evening while undergoing treatment.

His son, Emmanuel, confirmed the death to The Standard, stating that Chebukati died at his home in Nairobi. He had spent a week in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The former IEBC Chair had been unwell for some time, though the circumstances surrounding his illness remain unclear.

Chebukati, a lawyer by profession, served as the chairperson of the electoral commission from 2017 until his retirement in January 2023.

He presided over the 2017 and 2022 General Election, and a re-run of the presidential election in 2017.

He was the first IEBC Chairperson to successfully complete the six-year constitutional term.
