Expect downpours, weatherman say as long rains begin

Kenya Meteorological Department has confirmed the onset of the March-April-May long rains in parts of the country, with more regions expected to see rainfall in the coming days.

Director of Kenya Meteorological Services David Gikungu said the rains recorded between March 10 and 16 marked the beginning of the season in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Nairobi and isolated areas in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, Southeastern lowlands and parts of Isiolo County.

"Compared to the previous week, rainfall amounts increased, especially in the Southeastern lowlands and parts of the Northeastern region," said Gikungu.

The department expects the remaining parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley and Southeastern lowlands to experience onset this week. Northeastern Kenya is likely to receive rainfall between March 18 and 31, though dry spells may follow.

Northwestern Kenya and the coastal region are forecasted to have occasional rainfall during March, though it may not meet the onset criteria. The peak of the season in the coastal region is expected in May, with onset likely occurring in April.

Kenya Meteorological Department has urged residents in areas expecting heavy rainfall, including the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, Nairobi, Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, Southeastern lowlands and Northeastern Kenya, to take precautions.

"Isolated heavy rainfall events are likely in some areas. Residents should remain alert for possible downpours and ensure safety measures are in place," said Gikungu.
