Three students and a tout conductor died in a road accident in Nyakach, Kisumu county.
The accident occurred after a 14-seater matatu rammed a stationery sugarcane truck.
The truck stalled after developing a mechanical problem at Kibuon, Nyakach sub-county.
Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Peter Maina said nine people were injured with three in critical condition and receiving treatment at the Nyabondo Mission Hospital in Nyakach.
"We have four fatalities, these include three students and a conductor. Then we have other three people with serious inquiries while six others have also been slightly injured. All of them are undergoing treatment at Nyabondo Mission Hospital," Maina said.
"The matatu was from Oyugis in Homa Bay headed to Kisumu and there was a sugarcane truck that had reportedly stalled along the road after developing a mechanical problem, matatu hit the truck causing the accident," he added.
He urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads to avert accidents.
"This is a very unfortunate incident. We have lost innocent lives including school-going children, it's a really sad morning. I want to call upon all stakeholders in the transport industry to be responsible at all times. The drivers should always be careful and must not let down their guard whenever they are on the road," he said.
