A dormitory was destroyed by fire at St Mary's Girls Primary School in Nakuru County.

Irene Cheptum, the Acting Deputy County Commissioner of Nakuru East Sub County, said no one was injured in the incident that occurred at around 10 am on Sunday.

Cheptum noted that the fire destroyed all the bedding and personal items belonging to 50 students.

“We want to assure the parents that all the girls were safe as they were in their morning worship at the school’s hall,” she said.

She said all the 1,800 girls in the school were accounted for. The police boss suspects that the fire could have been caused by power surge.

“We are informed that there was a power outage on Saturday night, and when it was restored this morning, the disaster occurred. We suspect it may have caused it,” she said.

She thanked the first responders who put out the fire and assured parents that their children are safe.

Cheptum said the girls will move to a newly constructed dormitory.

The teachers and Kenya Red Cross Society personnel are counselling the girls after the shocking incident.

“The school had also had initiatives to train the children on fire drills, and the girls were prepared. No one panicked,” she said.
