Five people were killed, and five others were injured in a bandit attack in Kilepoi, Baragoi, Samburu County.

The bandits, alleged to be from the Turkana community, ambushed the village in Samburu North to steal cattle.

A herder, Jackson Lekaira, and local herders engaged the armed attackers and overpowered them, forcing them to flee and leave behind the stolen cattle.

“We are tired of these frequent attacks. We have lost lives. We want the government to disarm the attackers and eliminate all illegal guns,” Lekairab said.

Josephat Lenguris, the county chief officer in charge of health, reported that two patients with gunshot wounds were admitted to Samburu County Referral Hospital.

“Three other patients are at Baragoi Health Center. One patient died at the county referral hospital,” he added.

Area Police Commander Thomas Ototo said a security operation was underway to apprehend the attackers. “Officers are pursuing the attackers. Unfortunately, we have lost lives in this incident,” he said. He noted that police recovered 126 cattle from the bandits.

Tension has escalated in the area due to a series of attacks that have claimed 15 lives since the beginning of the year.

On Monday, a businessman was killed when bandits raided his shop in Baragoi town. The incident prompted local traders to demonstrate, demanding that the government increase security in the region.

The businessman’s two sons, who were injured in the attack, are in the county hospital.

Reuben Ekai, a resident, called on Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen to take action against the attackers. “Innocent people have lost their lives," he said.
