A farmer is counting losses after lightning killed two cows following downpour in Mbaya village, Lelan Location West Pokot county on Thursday.

The incident occurred at around 6:20 pm when the cows were grazing near the homestead.

“I was just preparing to bring the animals back into the shed when I heard a loud bang. Moments later, I found my cows lying motionless,” said the farmer Petro Kudungole Kudungole who was visibly shaken.

“This is a huge loss for me. Those cows were my only source of livelihood.”

Lelan Location chief Daniel Nguriatudo, said the lightning struck after downpour in the area.

“This unfortunate incident is a reminder of the dangers posed by changing weather patterns. We urge residents to take caution, especially during the rainy season,” said Chief Nguriatudo.

Residents have called on the county government and local disaster response teams to support the affected family. Kudungole also appealed for assistance from the authorities, saying, “I hope the government or well-wishers can step in and help me recover from this loss. Replacing the animals will not be easy.”

This incident comes a month after a similar tragedy in Kapkanyar Lelan division where a lightning killed nine cows belonging to the family of Kamaran Akoma.

“This is the worst thing that has ever happened to us. We depended on these animals for our livelihood, and now we have nothing left,” said Akoma.

Kamaran and Kudungole appealed for urgent intervention from the county government under the Ministry of Disaster Management, especially during these difficult economic times.

Local leaders are now calling for increased awareness and investment in preventive measures to save communities from the impact of extreme weather on livestock and  livelihoods.
