KDF, APK shine in Kenya Cup

Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and Administration Police of Kenya (APK) were in brilliant form as the inaugural Kenya Volleyball Federation Kenya Cup got underway yesterday at Kasarani Indoor Arena.

In Group B, KDF battled to a 3-1 win against Kenya Airport Police Unit (KAPU) to increase their chances of advancing to the knockouts. KDF made their intentions to bag maximum points known with a 25-21 first-set win.

KAPU recovered and took charge of the second set taking it 25-19 to level matters 1-1. The soldiers would bounce back to dominate the third and fourth sets cruising to victory in 25-20 and 25-17.

KDF will be in action today against reigning national league champions Kenya Prisons while KAPU will be hoping to redeem themselves when they take on Trailblazers. Chema Volleyball Club whose opening clash against Trailblazers was postponed is the fifth side in Group B.

APK launched their title hunt on a high dismissing Kenya Army in straight sets in Group A. The two sides were marched from the onset but it was APK who wanted the victory badly snatching the first set 25-22. They put up a spirited fight to outwit the soldiers and take the second set 25-23 before sealing victory by the same margin in the third set.

The win enhanced APK’s chances of finishing in the top four in their pool and qualifying for the quarterfinals. However, they have to be at their best when they take on Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), GSU and Equity Bank in their remaining group matches. The General Service Unit (GSU) will clash with the Kenya Army. The paramilitary side will be out to extend their good run against the soldiers who they beat in straight sets during the third leg of the league.
