Reigning champions on Wednesday showed their might to secure semis slots in the ongoing Brookside Secondary Schools national Term One games at Shanzu Teachers College and Shimo La Tewa High School, Mombasa.

Musingu Boys High School from Western affirmed their intentions to retain the hockey title with a resounding 3-0 win against homeboys Mnyenzeni Secondary School in their second Group B match.

Musingu began their campaign by edging out debutants Matiliku Secondary School from Eastern 1-0. A second win secured their place in the last four inching them closer to retaining their title.

Musingu captain Elvis Shigunzi said they are on track to achieving their objectives.

“Our first aim was to reach the knockouts and I’m glad we did it with a match at hand. Our two wins did not come easy because competition is very stiff and every team is fighting to snatch the trophy,” Shigunzi said.

After a goalless first quarter, Brian Anzeze finally outsmarted the Mnyenzeni defence to hit the ball past goalkeeper Abubakar Yawa through an 18th minute field goal.

Mnyenzeni then tightened their defence while also hunting for an equaliser. However, they were outplayed by Musingu who dominated them, denying them ball possession and ensuring that they had no chance to score with Anzeze’s strike being the only goal of the first half.

Musingu controlled the second half with their efforts paying off in the 38th as Shigunzi successfully converted a penalty corner to give them a 2-0 lead going into the final quarter. Musingu were home and dry in the 51st minute through a Newton Mwanga field goal.

In another Group B encounter, Mpesa Foundation Academy dimmed Matiliku’s hopes of reaching semis after subjecting them to a 3-0 beating. Mark Howard bagged a brace for Mpesa with Andora adding a third.

In the girls' contest, East Africa champions St Joseph’s Girls High School Kitale secured their place in the semis after thumping AIC Nyayo 3-0 in their second Group A match.

Vallary Ludiali continued with her impressive show hitting the board twice to help her side secure their second win. Audrey Grener added St Joseph’s third goal. Nairobi’s Mwiki Secondary School played to a barren draw against home girls St Charles Lwanga.

In Group B, rookies Ng’iya Girls from Nyanza proved that they are no pushovers after rallying from two goals down to hold defending champions Tigoi Girls to a 2-2 draw.

Ng’iya, who had begun their campaign with a 2-1 win over, Mpesa will today take on 2014 national winners St John’s Kaloleni in their last pool match. A victory in the match will see them advance to the semis.

In handball, champions St Luke’s Kimilili made light work of Rift Valley’s St Albert Kamito routing them 37-20 in their second Group B to remain on course to retaining their title.

Kimilili had launched their quest with a 36-19 win over Coast region’s Jaribuni Secondary School.

Jaribuni bounced back from their defeat to Kimilili to beat Makuyu Boys from Central 31-17 in their second pool match.
