Bungoma residents hold protests over threats to axe Wetangula

Hundreds of residents of Bungoma County took to the streets on Tuesday in a peaceful protest against ongoing threats to impeach National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.

The demonstrators, carrying placards and chanting slogans in support of Wetang’ula, condemned opposition MPs for pushing for his removal, citing allegations of bias in parliamentary proceedings.

The protesters called on President William Ruto to shield Wetang’ula from what they described as politically motivated attacks by the opposition.

Many of the residents view Wetang’ula as a key ally of the president and a strong pillar of the Mulembe nation. The protesters believe the impeachment threats against him are part of a broader political witch-hunt.

"President Ruto should not remain silent while Wetang’ula is attacked. He has been loyal to the president and has been crucial in spearheading the Kenya Kwanza agenda," said Wekesa.

They also called on opposition MPs, especially those allied with the Azimio la Umoja coalition, to focus on supporting the government's development agenda instead of engaging in divisive political fights.

"We want leaders to work together to fulfill the promises they made to Kenyans, not waste time on unnecessary political battles," said Rose Matere, one of the protesters.

 "Wetang’ula has been instrumental in passing key laws that are driving the country forward. We call upon President Ruto and all Kenya Kwanza MPs to protect him from unnecessary attacks." She added.

They accused opposition lawmakers of attempting to destabilize Parliament by targeting Wetang’ula, who they credit with maintaining order and ensuring smooth legislative processes. They reiterated his critical role in facilitating the passage of bills aligned with the government’s agenda.

"Wetang’ula has stood with the president and ensured that Parliament functions efficiently. Those eyeing his seat should wait for 2027 instead of attempting to force him out," said Dickson Okisai, a youth leader from Kanduyi.

The residents vowed to continue defending Wetang’ula against any politically motivated attacks. They warned that any attempts to remove him would face strong resistance from Western Kenya leaders and voters.

As political tensions continue to rise in Parliament, where opposition MPs have accused Wetang’ula of favoring Kenya Kwanza in legislative debates, his supporters maintain that he has remained impartial in his role as Speaker. They argue that his leadership has ensured the efficient functioning of the National Assembly.
