Doctors threaten strike over welfare issues at MTRH

Doctors at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital have issued a 14-day ultimatum to the hospital management threatening to withdraw their services over unresolved welfare issues.

In a letter dated January 22 and signed by Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists' Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Dr. Davji Bhimji Atellah, the union cited six grievances including failure to convert doctors from contractual to permanent and pensionable terms.

“KMPDU notes that MTRH has subjected doctors to unfair labour practices including irregular contracts, denial of leave, lack of medical cover and lack of career progression,” said Atellah.

The union accused the hospital of failing to remit third-party deductions for bank loans, investment policies and pensions, resulting in penalties for affected doctors.

They also noted that doctors and their families have lacked medical insurance since the lapse of an NHIF contract in August 2024.

“Doctors are forced to pay out of pocket due to inefficiencies in the in-house scheme including drug shortages and limited availability outside Eldoret,” said Atellah.

Other issues raised include failure to promote doctors, register the 2021-2025 collective bargaining agreement and pay arrears from a partially implemented salary structure.

The union warned that unless the hospital addresses the grievances within 14 days, all doctors at MTRH would withdraw their services until their demands are met.
