Your skin, your rules: Glowing skin begins with understanding your type

Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and just like your overall health, it requires the right care. However, did you know that your skin type plays a significant role in how you should care for it? Different environments affect skin in various ways, and understanding your skin type is key to maintaining healthy skin.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), skin is generally classified into five main types. Normal skin is well-balanced, neither too oily nor too dry, making it easier to maintain. Oily skin produces excess sebum, leading to a shiny appearance and a higher tendency for acne breakouts.

Dry skin, on the other hand, lacks moisture, often feeling rough, flaky, or irritated. Combination skin features both dry and oily areas, typically with an oily T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) and drier cheeks. Sensitive skin is prone to irritation from skincare products, environmental factors, or certain foods, requiring extra caution when choosing skincare products.

Globally, skin concerns vary based on climate and lifestyle. In colder climates, dry skin is a common issue, requiring deep moisturisation. In humid regions, oily and acne-prone skin is more prevalent, making lightweight, non-greasy products essential.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) emphasises the importance of protecting the skin from harmful UV rays, as excessive sun exposure increases the risk of skin cancer. Sunscreen use is widely encouraged, yet studies show that many people still neglect it.

Kenya’s diverse climate, ranging from humid coastal areas to dry, arid regions, affects skin health in different ways.

Additionally, pollution in major cities, such as Nairobi can contribute to skin issues, such as acne and premature ageing. A 2023 study by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) highlighted that air pollution can lead to skin inflammation and damage, making proper cleansing and hydration crucial.

Skin health is not one-size-fits-all. Understanding your skin type and adjusting your routine to suit your environment is the best way to achieve healthy, glowing skin. As experts at the British Skin Foundation say, “Good skincare is about consistency, not complexity.” Keep it simple, stay hydrated, and protect your skin from the sun.

Here are tips on how to care for your skin type, regardless of where you are. Adopting a good skincare routine is essential. Here’s how to care for different skin types:

Normal skin: Maintain balance with gentle cleansers, moisturisers, and Sun Protection Factor (SPF).Oily skin: Use oil-free cleansers, lightweight moisturisers, and avoid over-washing, as this can increase oil production.

Dry skin: Hydrate with thick moisturisers, avoid hot showers, and drink plenty of water.

Combination skin: Use targeted products—lightweight for the oily areas and richer creams for dry zones.

Sensitive skin: Stick to fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products and always do a patch test before trying new skincare items.
