Gilgil MP Martha Wangari has decried the rising cases of fatal road accidents in the country, as the family that lost six people — including three children — prepared to bury their kin.
Wangari described the number of fatal accidents over the past two months as worrying, adding that it was time the Ministry of Transport cracked down on errant drivers.
Last week, seven people, including six members of one family, died along the Naivasha–Mai Mahiu road after their car was involved in a head-on collision with a trailer.
Among those who died were three brothers and three minors, with the burial slated for today at the family’s home in Eburru, Gilgil.
Speaking after visiting the mourning family, Wangari noted that in the past month, the country had recorded several major accidents resulting in dozens of deaths.
“Last week, we lost seven in Naivasha and, over the weekend, another 13 people died in Kericho — and this is worrying,” she said.
While consoling the bereaved, the legislator described the deaths as very painful and devastating, adding that the family deserved all forms of support.
She added that the planned expansion of the Rironi–Mau Summit road would help reduce accidents along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway.
“We laud the promise by the government to construct a dual-carriage from Rironi to Mau Summit.’’
