Awareness of erectile dysfunction sees surge in number of men seeking treatment

An increase in awareness has led to a surge in consultations for sexual health among Kenyan men aged 40 to 69, according to a recent analysis by AAR Hospital.

Urologists at the facility report that a significant number of middle-aged men are seeking treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED). They attribute this rise to factors such as sedentary lifestyles, poor dietary habits, and societal pressures that impact mental health.

"In every urology clinic, there are men seeking help for erectile dysfunction. Our analysis shows that the prevalence increases with age, with some studies indicating that up to 50 percent of men between 40 and 69 years are affected," stated Dr Samuel Ogombe, the lead urologist at AAR Hospital.

The ease of access to information on the internet has encouraged men to engage in discussions about ED and seek medical assistance. Dr Ogombe noted that many patients conduct preliminary online research and may attempt self-medication before turning to healthcare providers. However, he cautioned that some unverified remedies could lead to severe, long-term consequences.

ED is often linked with other medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases. "The relationship between ED and cardiovascular disease is well documented. Local studies in Kenya have confirmed this connection. Essentially, blockages in the blood vessels that supply various organs, including the reproductive organs, can lead to erectile dysfunction. There is a significant correlation between ED and coronary heart disease, which can even result in heart attacks," Dr Ogombe explained.

He emphasized the importance of good mental health for optimal sexual function, citing established links between ED and psychosocial factors.

Worryingly, Dr Ogombe has observed a troubling trend of erectile dysfunction among younger men, likely due to factors such as sedentary lifestyles, inadequate exercise, poor diet, and smoking.

Treatment options for ED vary and may include counseling, medical therapy, and surgical interventions, depending on individual circumstances. "Penile prostheses are available locally and can be considered in cases where medical therapy fails. No man should suffer in silence," he urged.

Dr Ogombe concluded by noting that ED is not a singular disease; treatment must be tailored to each patient based on underlying causes, comorbidities, and severity.
