Kenya is set to host the 2025 Africa Public Service Day (APSD) from 10 to 12 June 2025 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, with innovation and institutional resilience taking centre stage.

Organised by the Ministry of Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes, the three-day event will convene ministries, departments, agencies, and county governments under the theme: “Enhancing the Agility and Resilience of Public Institutions to Achieve Equitable Governance and Rapidly Address Historical Service Delivery Gaps.”

This year’s theme underscores the government’s commitment to fostering inclusive, equitable, and technology-driven public service reforms aimed at addressing long-standing disparities in access and efficiency.

A highlight of the celebration will be a public exhibition of transformative innovations by Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and County Governments (MDACs).

These submissions will showcase practical, locally developed solutions that have improved workflows, expanded access, and enhanced transparency in public service delivery.

Outstanding innovations will be reviewed and considered for presentation at the continental APSD celebration later this month in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

In a circular sent to all public institutions, Principal Secretary for Public Service, Dr Jane Jere Imbunya, urged full participation, describing APSD 2025 as a vital platform for institutional visibility, peer learning, and reflection on progress made towards improved service delivery.

She highlighted the importance of aligning institutional efforts with national priorities, especially in digital transformation and inclusive governance.

Complementing the exhibition will be a national symposium bringing together public sector leaders, scholars, and experts for high-level dialogue on reforming and strengthening institutional systems.

The sessions will explore the role of innovation, citizen engagement, and public sector resilience in fostering accountability and transparency.

“This year, the focus is not just on sectors, but on the systems and frameworks that hold them together,” said Dr Imbunya. “It’s about asking what makes institutions truly adaptive and inclusive.”

Unlike previous APSD celebrations that focused on specific sectors like education or agriculture, this year’s event expands its scope to examine structural issues within public institutions themselves.

Organisers hope the early scheduling of Kenya’s event will allow for deeper reflection, documentation, and preparation ahead of the African Union-wide commemoration.

First celebrated in 1994, APSD was established by African Ministers of Public and Civil Service as a platform to recognise excellence and promote innovation in the public sector.

Kenya’s 2025 observance continues this legacy, reaffirming the country’s leadership in public service reform and its commitment to building a more equitable future for all citizens.
