Defending champions Kabras Sugar RFC will be out to retain their Christie Sevens crown when the two-day tournament kicks off today at the RFUEA Grounds, Nairobi.

The sugarmen, who currently sit fifth on the National Sevens Circuit standings, have recalled five Kenyan internationals in a bid to bounce back from a disappointing outing at the Prinsloo Sevens in Nakuru.

Kabras has named a strong squad blending returning stars with consistent performers from the first two legs of the circuit.

Brian Tanga, one of Kabras’ most experienced campaigners, returns after missing the opening two legs due to Kenya Simbas duty.

Joining him is the versatile playmaker Jone Kubu, who made his World Sevens Series debut with Shujaa earlier this season and also featured for the Simbas. The pair’s creativity, game management, and attacking flair are expected to inject fresh energy into Kabras’ campaign.

Also recalled are Patrick Lumumba, a standout in the 15s format, powerful forward Derrick Ashiundu, and Griffin Chao, all of whom featured for the Simbas in recent months.

These additions bolster the squad’s physicality and depth, giving Adaka more tactical options heading into the weekend.

They will link up with retained players William Mwanji, Brian Mutua, Jackson Siketi, Jacktone Osoo, Roy Maruti, and Eric Cantona, who formed the backbone of Kabras’ side in the opening legs. Mike Lukusi also returns after missing the Prinsloo leg, adding more firepower to the attack.

Coach Max Adaka believes the reinforcements have come at the right time.

“We know Christie Sevens is one of the most competitive tournaments on the circuit, and as defending champions, everyone will be coming for us,” he said.

“The return of our internationals gives us more experience and leadership on the pitch. The goal is to win our pool, get to the knockouts, and then defend our title. We’ve worked on fixing the small mistakes from Prinsloo and I’m confident the boys are ready.”

Kabras have been drawn in Group C alongside Menengai Oilers, Daystar Falcons, and Uganda’s Ruga Ruga Select. Oilers, currently in strong form, will be their biggest challenge in the pool stages, while Daystar and Ruga Ruga bring unpredictability and raw pace that could cause upsets.

Elsewhere, Group A is headlined by Strathmore Leos, who will face hosts Kenya Harlequin, Zetech Oaks, and Mombasa Sports Club Rugby. Group B features Catholic Monks, Nakuru RFC, Impala RFC, and MMUST, promising a tightly contested battle for the two knockout slots.

Group D pits KCB Rugby against Mwamba RFC, Nondescripts, and KU Blak Blad in what could be one of the most physically demanding groups of the weekend.

The Christie Sevens is the third leg of the 2025 National Sevens Circuit

“Every game will matter, and we can’t take anyone lightly,” Adaka added.

“We know our fans will be there in big numbers, and we want to give them something to cheer about.”
