Kenyan football fraternity is in mourning following the death of long-serving football administrator and former Secretary General of the then Football Kenya Federation (formerly Kenya Football Federation) Sammy Joel Obingo.
Obingo passed on at the Mumias Level 4 hospital on Tuesday, 5:30 pm, after he fell off a motorcycle.
According to the family spokesman, Abnery Aswani, Obingo attended the classroom construction ground-breaking ceremony at the Mumias Township Primary School, where he was the chairperson.
He complained that he felt weak at the meeting and took a motorcycle home. 300 metres to his destination, he fell off the bike and was rushed to the Mumias Level 4 hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
The spokesperson also revealed that Obingo was diagnosed with intestinal obstruction last year and underwent an operation at the LifeCare Hospital in Bungoma.
“He recovered and was jovial even before the day of the groundbreaking meeting,” said Aswani.
Burial preparations:
The body is currently lying at St. Mary’s Hospital Mortuary with burial plans already underway.
The family plans to lay him to rest on April 26, 2025, at Eshitukhumi village in Mumias.
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) paid tribute to Obingo’s contribution to football development in their condolence message.
“As we reflect on his invaluable service to Kenyan football, our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time,” the federation posted.
The Federation’s President Hussein Mohammed also extended his heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Obingo.
