Nairobi Members of County Assembly have vowed to follow the footsteps of the late Joel Munuve, Kariobangi North representative who died on Tuesday morning after a short illness.
During a special session in the Assembly to pay tribute to the fallen colleague the MCAs also called for answers on his demise adding that they will conclude some of Munuve's unfinished businesses in the Assembly.
Just before his death Munuve had made a formal request in regard to the formation of a private company by the Executive to handle solid waste in the city, a move that he described as suspicious.
He has also raised questions touching on the school feeding programme and how funds towards it was managed.
“We only want to know the cause of his death, whether it was a natural death or it was assassination. That is all that we want to know,” Nominated MCA Joyce Kamau said.
Adding that, “I want to call on my colleagues to rise and do our oversight role, we were not elected to do praise and worship. We were elected to represent the people of Nairobi.
She challenged the members to follow Munuve’s footsteps in pushing for payment of garbage contractors and timely disbursement of bursaries.
"Let us know where the money is directed to. This is a wakeup call for all of us, let us arise and be leaders that we were elected to be," she added.
In his message of condolence, Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja described Munuve as a dedicated and passionate servant of the people.
“His voice in the Nairobi County Assembly was firm and always grounded in the pursuit of better service delivery and dignity for the people of Karionagi North.
Ngara Ward MCA Chege Mwaura noted that a befitting send-off for the late Member was to ensure that the statements he had requested be tabled.
Mwaura's said in regards to the formation of a private garbage firm, some members of the executive had turned down invitations to the Assembly’s Environment Committee which Munuve had interest to understand some issues.
“Some members of the Executive had refused to come to the Environment committee that was probing the company when they were called. Let us see if they will refuse to come in honour of Munuve," Mwaura said.
Umoja 1 Member Mark Macharia however cautioned the politicians from using the late MCAS death to settle political scores.
"Let us not be fooled by what other politicians out there want to use as a tool for their battles, let no one use the death of our colleague to settle political scores" Macharia said.
