The Directorate of Criminal Investigations will lead the probe into the death of Kariobangi North Member of County Assembly Joel Munuve.
Speaking on behalf of the family, at Lee Funeral home in Nairobi, Lawyer Danstan Omari said the autopsy will be conducted on Friday, April 25, following a unanimous agreement between the family, the County government and investigators.
“We had a meeting with the government and family pathologists at the regional offices at Nairobi area where the Director of homicide is based and we have agreed to conduct the post mortem on Friday,” Omari announced
Further, he said it was fair to involve all the interested parties when establishing the cause of the death which occurred outside a hospital before the MCA was attended.
“When somebody dies in such a manner, it is mandatory to ascertain the cause of death through autopsy, this will involve the DCI’s homicide unit, “Omari explained.
Adding that, “The post mortem will clear any doubts and closure of death. The homicide experts have sought the services of a government pathologist even though the family, County Assembly and the Executive have an option of getting their own,”
Omari said since the deceased was a public figure, the law does not bar anyone from getting a private pathologist to oversee the postmortem exercise.
Munuve who has been questioning some projects being undertaken by the Nairobi County government died on Tuesday while being rushed to hospital after complaining of some pain.
His death has sparked a debate among his fellow Members of the County Assembly who committed to pursue the statements he had requested on the floor of the house touching on some key projects in the county.
On Wednesday evening, Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja said proper investigations will be carried out to establish circumstances surrounding Munuve’s death.
“I don’t know why people call it murder, we have asked for full investigations to understand what happened. I don’t think he had a history of illness,” stated the governor.
In a special Assembly session on Wednesday the Nairobi MCAs asked for fair investigations into Munuve’s death so as to clear any doubts.
“We only want to know the cause of his death, whether it was a natural death or an assassination. That is all what we want to know,” nominated member Joyce Kamau said
Adding that, “I want to call on my colleagues to rise and do our oversight role, we were not elected to do praise and worship. We were elected to represent the people of Nairobi.
