Ida, Orengo condemn spate of violence in Nyanza

Siaya Governor James Orengo and ODM leader Raila Odinga’s spouse Ida Odinga have called for peaceful coexistence.

They decried the violence witnessed in parts of Nyanza in the recent past.

Speaking during the Silver Jubilee celebration of St Michael and All Angels Cathedral, Bondo, Ida said violence was not good for the country.

She cited the violence witnessed in Bondo during the ODM grassroots elections on April 9, and urged residents to shun hooliganism.

"When you attack people here in Bondo, you're attacking your own relatives. These are not your enemies," said Ida.

She warned youth against being incited to cause violence by politicians.

Ida was accompanied by Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong'o, Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo, Siaya Speaker George Okode, and former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju.

Others were Principal Secretaries Ouma Oluga (Health) and Regina Orege (Trade).

Orengo echoed Ida's sentiments, saying there is a need to address any pressing issues amicably, devoid of violence.

The governor vowed to speak the truth to power.

"Let's not be afraid. The church should intercede on behalf of the people at times like this. We must have a sober and peaceful country," he said.

Orengo who is a critic of President William Ruto's administration, stood his ground, saying there must be accountability and transparency.

"The Constitution gives us the right to express ourselves on what is not right. I will always stand by the Constitution," he said.
