Two more suspects have been arrested in connection with the assassination of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, bringing the total number of individuals in custody to six.
In a statement, the National Police Service on Wednesday, confirmed the arrest of Edwin Oduor Odhiambo also known as Abdul Rashid and Dennis Sewe Munyasi.
The two were reportedly apprehended during an ongoing manhunt for the killers of the MP, who was shot dead on April 30 while stopped at a traffic light at the City Mortuary roundabout along Valley Road in Nairobi.
Reportedly, the two are the driver and the bodyguard of the slain MP.
Police said the suspects led investigators to a house belonging to Odhiambo, where two pistols suspected to have been used to execute the murder, a Retay Falcon and a Sarsilmaz were recovered, along with nine rounds of 9mm ammunition.
Also found at the premises were a bag and a pair of shoes believed to match those worn by one of the assailants captured on surveillance footage from the scene.
“All items recovered have been submitted for forensic examination. We extend our gratitude to the family and friends of Hon. Charles Were, and the members of the public for the continued provision of valuable information to our investigators,” reads the statement.
The development follows the earlier arrest and arraignment of four men: William Imoli Shighali, Juma Ali Haikal, Douglas Muchiri Wambugu, and David Mihigo Kagame who were presented in court on Monday and ordered to remain in police custody for 30 days.
One of the four, Haikal, was identified as a serving Administration Police officer. A search at his residence yielded a number of items including nine live bullets, eight tear gas canisters, a police uniform, and a vehicle believed to have been used to drop the suspects outside parliament.
Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor confirmed that Were was shot five times, with bullets tearing through his heart, lungs, and liver, leading to massive internal bleeding.
The shots included wounds on the chest, arm, and spine, suggesting a high degree of precision and intent.
