Kisumu Day High School believe they are better compared to last year as the team prepares to retain its Kisumu County football title this month.
Commonly referred to as ‘Yudhee’, Kisumu Day has not lost a match since the beginning of the KSSSA Term Two games last month where they won the Milimani Zone and Kisumu Central Sub County titles.
Kisumu Day hammered Lions High School 4-0 and Joel Omino Secondary School 6-0 in the preliminaries of the Milimani Zone games to get to the semifinals where they thrashed Got Nang’a Secondary School 6-0.
In the finals, Kisumu Day saw off archrivals Kisumu Boys 4-3 in post-match penalties after the two sides played out to a 0-0 draw on Friday last week.
Over the weekend, Kisumu Day continued their dominance in the Kisumu Central Sub County games which begun at the semifinal stages.
Hosting the semis at their own backyard, Kisumu Day humiliated Bishop Abiero Secondary School 7-0 to set up a final against their nemesis Kisumu Boys High School.
However, the high octane final scheduled to be played at Moi Stadium did not happen after Kisumu Boys failed to show up, handing the title to Kisumu Day.
Despite that, both Kisumu Day and Boys proceed to the Kisumu County Term Two finals that will kick off on June 17.
According to the Kisumu County Secondary School Sports Association (KCSSSA) rules and guidelines, the top two teams from each sub county proceed to the county finals where only one team will make it to the Nyanza Regional finals.
Speaking to the Standard Sports, Kisumu Day coach Booker Odhiambo said they are ready for any team and will be keen to defend their title.
“The boys have had very high training sessions and friendlies against top sides including former national champions St Anthony’s Boys Kitale, sessions that have helped expose the boys to high standards of football.
“Nevertheless, we expect tough matches because Kisumu County nowadays brings quality teams. What we know is we have to stick to our football and get to the regionals,” said Odhiambo.
Last year, Kisumu Day defeated Agai Secondary School 2-0 to be crowned champions.
