NPS condemns police harassment of journalists in Majengo

The National Police Service (NPS) has strongly condemned the harassment and obstruction of journalists covering riots in Majengo, Nairobi, on Wednesday.

In a statement, NPS assured the public that investigations would be conducted into the allegations, promising firm action against any officers found culpable.

“As a service, we are gravely concerned and strongly condemn such misconduct. Firm and decisive action will be taken against any officer found to have engaged in wrongdoing,” the statement read in part.

The police service also reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding media freedom, emphasizing the long-standing cordial relationship between the press and law enforcement.

At least four journalists from various media houses reported being assaulted by General Service Unit (GSU) officers while covering protests in Majengo. 

The demonstrations erupted after a 17-year-old boy was allegedly shot dead by police on Tuesday.

Reports indicate that some officers were caught on camera deleting footage from journalists' devices while harassing members of the press.
