Man jailed 150 years for killing his three children

A 40-year-old man who killed his three children has been sentenced to 150 years imprisonment by Bomet Law Courts.

Bernard Kipkemoi Kirui was found guilty of committing the offence in 2019 at Lelaitich in Chepalungu Sub-County.

Benard Kipkemoi Kirui was convicted for killing his sons Amos Kipngetich, 12, Vincent Kiprotich, 8, and Emanuel Kipronoh, while their mother was away.

On Monday, Bomet High Court Judge Julius Kipkosgei Ng’arNg’ar handed Kirui three consecutive 50-year sentences.

Terming the crime inhuman and shocking, Justice Ng’arng’ar said the sentence was meant to serve as a deterrent to similar offenses.

“This court cannot overlook such a grievous act. The punishment must reflect the severity of the crime committed,” he said.

Kirui was given 14 days to appeal the sentence.

Sharon Cherono, the mother of the children, welcomed the ruling, saying justice had finally been served.

The case has sparked debate on child protection and domestic violence, with rights groups calling for strict interventions to prevent such tragedies. Recently, police in Homa Bay County arrested a 38-year-old man who alleged killed his seven-year-old daughter by forcing her to drink one liter of petrol.

The man is accused of killing his daughter Grachines Lovely Odingo in the house at Minyere village, South Kanyikela Sub-location in Ndhiwa Sub County.  

Ndhiwa Sub-county Police commander John Losia said the man surrendered at Homa Bay Police Station.

“My colleagues in Homa Bay called me to say that a man had claimed that he killed his child in the Kanyikela area, around Sukari Industry. I told them to detain him for our officers to go there because there were high chances he was the one we were looking for,” Losia said.
