The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has begun a probe following a Sunday incident where goons allegedly disrupted a church service attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in Mwiki, Nairobi County.

In a statement, the authority clarified that the incident occurred after over a hundred motorcycles with several passengers arrived at the church venue from Kangundo Road.

The passengers who arrived right behind Gachagua’s entourage then started causing the commotion, demanding money from politicians.

This prompted police from Mwiki station to run to the venue after hearing gunshots and restored normalcy.

“So far, it has been established that the gunshots heard at the church were fired by the VIP security personnel and civilian licensed firearm holders in their bid to protect the leaders from the rowdy group, which was already causing damage to parked cars and other church property,” stated the authority.

Several people were arrested alongside 10 abandoned motorcycles, which were detained at the station.

However, the police commander had said that “the church failed to notify the police of the planned function, which included political leaders, and therefore, no advance security measures were deployed to handle such an eventuality”.

Following the incident, the  National Police Service has urged the public to refrain from such unruly conduct that undermines peace and safety.

Additionally, the public has been advised to express their concerns through proper channels rather than resorting to disorderly behavior that could lead to grave consequences.
